In the life of Gongcheng people, oil tea has long transcended a simple drink and become a life ritual deeply rooted in their bones. Between meals or in leisure afternoons, families sit around a table with a casserole filled with steaming golden tea soup and various side dishes scattered around. A bowl taken amid laughter is the most stable mortal warmth. There are no complicated rules or elegant etiquettes; a sip of hot soup dissolves all weariness and worries in the smoke of life.
During grand Yao festivals, oil tea is the irreplaceable protagonist of banquets. Several large iron pots are set up in the village, and the fragrance of tea and oil fills the whole village with the rise and fall of wooden mallets. Yao men and women in traditional costumes serve bowls of oil tea to guests. The warmth of the soup reflects simple smiling faces, integrating the enthusiasm and kindness of Yao people into every bowl of tea. A bowl of oil tea is the song of festivals, the reunion of ethnic groups, and a cultural mark engraved in the national blood.
Many Gongcheng people studying and working away from home always pack several bags of portable oil tea in their luggage. In foreign streets, brewing a bowl of familiar tea brings the familiar bitter‑sweet taste to the tongue, as if instantly returning to the mountains of northern Guangxi and the old stove with curling smoke. Oil tea is the antidote to homesickness, the tenderest thought hometown sends to wanderers. No matter how far they go, a bowl of hot soup can point the way home.
