Amid the rolling mountains of Gongcheng, Guilin, Guangxi, mist always shrouds the dark peaks. Yao villages are built along the hills, with green‑tiled wooden houses hidden deep among green bamboos and pine forests. When the first ray of dawn pierces the morning fog, the first smoke rising from the villages always comes from oil tea stoves. This wisp of smoke has spanned thousands of years, simmering a unique flavor belonging to northern Guangxi, affectionately known to the world as "China’s Native Coffee" — Gongcheng Oil Tea.

It does not have the rich burnt aroma of Western coffee beans, but takes ginger, tea leaves, garlic and peanuts as its core ingredients. They are repeatedly pounded and stir‑fried in hot oil, refining a rich and long‑lasting aftertaste. It requires no delicate coffee machines or glassware; an iron pot, a handful of firewood and a bowl of boiling mountain spring water can create a warming taste that nourishes body and soul, warming the mornings and evenings of generations of Yao people.

In the life of Gongcheng people, oil tea is never just a simple drink, but a mortal belief engraved in their blood. At dawn, grandmothers gather around the stove, putting cleaned tea leaves, crushed ginger and plump peanuts into iron pots. As hot oil boils, wooden mallets pound constantly, and the fragrance of ingredients bursts out little by little, intertwining with the smoke of firewood and lingering long in the alleys. When the fragrance reaches its peak, boiling spring water is poured in, and the golden thick oil tea boils vigorously, bitter yet sweet in aftertaste, the unique flavor of Yao mountain mornings.
