IELTS Essay Topic: Modern technology has made people less socially active and reduced face-to-face communication. To what extent do you agree or disagree? In contemporary society, technological innovation has profoundly transformed the way people communicate, interact and build relationships. Some individuals argue that the widespread use of digital devices and online platforms has weakened people’s social skills and reduced face-to-face contact in daily life. While I acknowledge that excessive technology use may cause certain social problems, I firmly believe that modern technology generally enhances human communication and expands social opportunities. On the one hand, it is true that over-reliance on digital communication can negatively affect people’s real-life social abilities. Firstly, many people, especially teenagers and young adults, spend a large amount of time scrolling through social media, chatting online or watching short videos. This long screen time reduces the hours they spend talking with family members, playing with friends or participating in offline group activities. Gradually, they may become shy, introverted or even socially anxious when facing real conversations, because they are more comfortable typing words than expressing emotions face to face. Secondly, online communication lacks non-verbal expressions such as eye contact, facial expressions and body language, which are essential components of genuine human interaction. Many people get used to simplified online conversations with emojis and short sentences, so they gradually lose the ability to organize logical sentences, observe others’ feelings and respond appropriately in real-life situations. As a result, some people appear awkward and unconfident during face-to-face communication, leading others to believe that technology has made society less sociable. Furthermore, the addictive nature of digital entertainment creates isolation in modern life. Instead of gathering with relatives or neighbours, many people prefer staying alone at home with mobile phones or computers. This trend weakens community bonds and reduces traditional social activities, which makes modern life seem more alienated and disconnected compared with the past. On the other hand, technology actually offers far more opportunities for people to socialize and connect with others. The most obvious benefit is that digital communication breaks geographical limits. In the past, people could only maintain relationships with people living nearby. However, modern tools such as video calls, instant messaging and international social platforms allow people to keep in touch with friends, classmates and family members living in different cities or even different countries. This greatly strengthens long-distance relationships and makes human connections more convenient and efficient. In addition, online platforms create new social communities based on shared hobbies, careers and values. Many people find like-minded friends online who they could never meet in their real-life circles. For example, people interested in reading, sports, music or foreign languages can join online groups, exchange ideas and take part in online discussions. These virtual social activities enrich people’s social experience and help them build more diverse social networks. Moreover, modern technology encourages people to participate in more public and social activities. Various online campaigns, volunteer recruitment information and community activities are widely spread on the Internet, allowing more citizens to join offline social events. In this sense, the Internet acts as a bridge that connects individuals with society instead of separating them. From a long-term perspective, technological progress improves overall social efficiency and promotes global communication and cultural exchange. Business cooperation, academic communication and international cultural interaction all rely heavily on modern technology. These large-scale social communications greatly enhance people’s social experience and broaden their horizons, which traditional face-to-face communication cannot achieve on such a large scale. In conclusion, although excessive use of technology may lead to less offline communication and minor social skill problems for some individuals, the overall influence of modern technology on human social development is positive. It removes distance barriers, creates new social circles and enriches various forms of communication. Therefore, technology does not make people less social; instead, it makes modern communication more flexible, diverse and inclusive. The key is for individuals to use digital tools rationally and balance online entertainment with real-life interaction.
