吸血蝠犬体型比鬣狗较大，肩高80-90厘米，体长2米左右，皮肤类似蜥蜴，是那种暗灰色的鳞片，皮肤裸露处（如肚皮）不满不规则的红色脉络状纹路，情绪激动时，纹路会变亮。背部有六到八根角质刺，从颈部延伸至尾部。

头部类似于犬科和蝙蝠，吻部尖长，类似狐狸，上下颚满20到25颗匕首状牙齿。双眼为暗红色，夜视能力极强，耳朵类似蝙蝠耳，对低频声波敏感，四肢修长，前肢有五指，后肢有四趾，爪子锐利。

体温恒定，新陈代谢极快，需频繁进食

以血液为食，偏好哺乳动物的血液，如牛、羊、鹿等动物，也会攻击小型啮齿类或鸟类，调查显示，它们每次吸食约自身重量15%-20%的血液，我在72小时内没有进食，便会进入极度亢奋状态，攻击性大幅度提升。貌似对人类血液不感兴趣，每个攻击人类事件基本上都是人类误入它们的领地或是它们极饿的情况下

擅长在夜间狩猎，通常在黄昏到黎明时活动，白天基本上看不见它们的踪影。视觉类似于蛇，捕猎时采用“突袭-固定-吸血”的攻击方式：以时速60到70公里的速度冲刺，用前爪扑倒猎物，牙齿咬住颈部，之后开始吸食血液。过程迅速，猎物通常在十分钟左右被吸干血液，且几乎无声

群居生物，一个群体通常有7-8只，大型的群体通常在30以上40以下，但比较少见，通常团队协作，也有个别单独行动。吸血蝠犬有强烈的领地意识，如果有其他生物进入领地，会毫不犹豫的进行攻击，就算是同类，也会进行争斗

繁殖期在每年春季，雌性会通过低频声波吸引雄性，妊娠期3个月，每胎产1-3只幼崽。幼崽出生时无刺，4个月就会捕猎，2岁成年，寿命在17-21年。

目前主要分布在南美洲的热带雨林及其他地区，偏好阴暗、隐蔽的环境，常栖息于天然洞穴、废弃矿坑、茂密的藤蔓丛中，巢穴内会堆积猎物的骸骨。

The Vampire Bat - Hound is larger than a hyena, with a shoulder height of 80–90 centimeters and a body length of around 2 meters. Its skin resembles that of a lizard, covered in dark - gray scales. The exposed areas of its skin, such as the belly, are covered with irregular, red vein - like patterns that glow brighter when it is agitated. There are six to eight horny spines on its back, extending from the neck to the tail.

Its head is a blend of canine and bat features; the snout is long and pointed, much like a fox’s. Its jaws are filled with 20–25 dagger - shaped teeth. Its eyes are dark red, giving it exceptional night vision. It has bat - like ears, sensitive to low - frequency sound waves. Its limbs are slender, with five fingers on the forelimbs and four toes on the hind limbs, and its claws are sharp.

It has a constant body temperature and an extremely fast metabolism, so it needs to feed frequently.

It feeds on blood, showing a preference for the blood of mammals like cattle, sheep, and deer. It will also attack small rodents or birds. Research shows that each time it feeds, it consumes about 15%–20% of its own body weight in blood. If it goes without food for 72 hours, it will enter a state of extreme excitement, with a sharp increase in aggressiveness. It seemingly has no interest in human blood; most incidents of it attacking humans happen when humans stray into its territory or when it is extremely hungry.

They are adept at hunting at night and are generally active from dusk to dawn, scarcely seen during the daytime. Their vision resembles that of snakes. When hunting, they employ an “ambush - pin - bloodsucking” attack strategy: they dash at a speed of 60 to 70 kilometers per hour, knock down their prey with their front claws, sink their dagger - like teeth into the prey’s neck, and then begin to suck blood. The process is swift; the prey is usually drained of blood in around ten minutes, and the whole act is nearly noiseless.

Vampire bat - hounds are social animals. A typical group has 7–8 members. Larger groups, though uncommon, can have 30 to 40 individuals. They usually hunt in teams, yet some may act alone. They have a strong sense of territory. If any other creature, even a conspecific, enters their territory, they will launch an attack without hesitation.

Their breeding season occurs every spring. Females attract males via low - frequency sound waves. The gestation period lasts three months, and each birth yields 1–3 cubs. Cubs are born without the horny spines. They can hunt by four months old, reach adulthood at two years, and live for 17–21 years.

Presently, they are mainly distributed in the tropical rainforests of South America and other regions. They favor dark and secluded environments, often taking shelter in natural caves, abandoned mines, or dense tangles of vines. The skeletons of their prey are piled up within their lairs.

Their presence was first recorded in 1992 when livestock on a farm were killed. To this day, signs of their activity have been detected in 15 countries.
