【Aesop’s view:】

I get up early in the morning. I stretch my head up to take a good look at the room. No one's up yet. I roll over my bed, and then sit up straight, run my finger through my rough hair, thinking of what day it is. How long have I been there since that last December? Who knows. Well, I've tried to find a calendar. Doesn't work, just let you know. Two months? Maybe longer. As I know, there's over 20 people in this building. Of course, not counting those horrible creatures.

Naib's clock is still at 3 AM in the morning. I never used it. Trust me, that clock always gets 4 or 5 hours late even though we’ve tried to fix it frequently. Probably Nordon did it. He always wants to “get a good rest in the morning” so he wouldn't be placed in the earliest game. But that's actually a great thing too, that I can be in the same game as Emily is.

I change my clothes as quickly as I can, open the door and run down the stairs to get breakfast.

I'm alone, sitting in the hall. Candles were moved away since it wasn't dark at all, which made me think of a lovely morning at the end of March. March. I wait. Three more people come in, filling the other seats. Naib first, the Mercenary, holding a half-eaten tomato sandwich in his hand, sits in the nearest seat to me. Then, the Coordinator, Martha, wiping her flare gun with a piece of tissue. She serves in the military too, same as Naib. But she's way tougher than he is if we don't let her save people who were catched by the Hunters. Finally, Emily, the doctor, finds a seat on the other side of the table. She smiles at me, which makes me a little bit uncomfortable. Almost no one ever truly smiled at me nor chatted with me. Well, except for my roommates, Eli, Naib and Nordon. I don't want to speak with others either. I'm not that kind of chatter. I like the way of being alone. They probably think I'm weird. Yes, I'm weird.

“Hey, Aesop, want some crackers?” Naib asks, handing me some biscuits with strawberry jam on it, “I found them in the kicken, pretty good.”

“No thanks.” I lean back, trying higher my voice so he could hear me, “I've already had applesauce pancakes.”

“Okay.” Naib shrugs, “But I'll save some for you if you're hungry after this game.”

A large smile appears on his face. I try my best to smile back too, but the muscles keep going on the opposite side. He knows me better than anyone. Strawberry's my favourite, but I just don't want to take my mask off in front of others.

The bell rings. I close my eyes, feeling myself floating, then land on the floor again.

I open my eyes.

I find myself in the circus. Red tents covering the sky, old wooden chairs with faded little flags tossed on it and a small stage only about 10 feet wide. It's getting foggy around me. Almost everything is white now.

Is Jack the Ripper.

I began to decoding. My nails kind of hurt when I tap my fingers on the hard metal keyboard of the cipher machine. The wire vibrates, trembling as if it's too cold. Cold. I need to be somewhere cold. The hot sun makes me feel dizzy.

“Hi, Aesop.”

A sound comes from my back. I try to look over my shoulder. Emily, running towards me, holding a syringe in front of her chest. She frowns when she sees I'm decoding, but than grins at me,

“Never mind, I'll find another one.”

“Wait, don't leave!” I yell in my head, try to catch her hand, but she already turns away and is gone.

I sign, continuing taping those keyboards. We still have 2 machines left, pretty good, no one has been found yet. Yet. Suddenly, I hear someone screaming, then the sound of falling on the ground.

“He got someone.” I think in my head, finishing my cipher machine, and sneak to the door of the large camp as quietly as I can.

It's no one but Emily. Blood is everywhere, covering her white shawl and most of them spread on the ground. I turn my head back, trying not to think about how bloody that is. Thank God. I've seen her face since she came into the camp and find me decoding there. I run, finding a small clearing on the back side of the circus. I pull out the brushes from my makeup box and set the coffin on the ground. I run my finger through the smooth surface of the figure, using my finest brushes to clean off the dust and depict her body. The thinner one for eyes and eyebrows, the larger one for coloring. It doesn't take a long time to do all that stuff. Of course, it can't take too long. I step backwards, my eyes check through every detail. Everything's perfect.

10, 9, 8…

I counted the numbers as I hid myself in the bushes, feeling the criss crossing branches brush over my skin, the cool leaves going all over me.

7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1…

And there she is, coming out of the coffin. The blood had dried up on her clothes while she was on the rocket chair. She looks around carefully, takes a few steps out, and then stares back at the coffin.

“Emily, what are you doing here?” I can hear the voice of Martha, jumping and waving from the other side of the camp. “Oh my goodness, I've been looking around for you so long!” She gasps hard as she runs towards us.

“I think I just came out of this coffin.” Emily points at it, “It's Aesop's I think, I've seen him cleaning it in his room.”

“Well, yeah.” Martha shrugs a little bit, “He's an Embalmer, so, why not?”

“I wonder where he is.” Emily says slowly, looks away, “It seems that he's nearby.”

“No idea.” Martha frowns. “By the way, what are you going to do with him?”

“Nothing, just thank him for saving me.” Emily grins, “He seems to be a little bit shy while communicating with others, but I think he's pretty nice, isn't he?” She looks up at Martha.

Suddenly, I want to rush out of the bushes, hug her so tight, kiss her on the cheek, and yell out to the world that I like her! But it never did. Only happened in my mind.

“Why don't you chase her, Aesop?” I could hear Naib said in my head.

“Afraid? Come one, man, you can do better than this.” Eli said, patting my shoulder as if we were a group of old friends drinking a couple glasses of beer in the bar and recounting some annoyances.

“Well, don't let others take the lead, you know.” Nordon came in with 4 cups of cocoa with marshmallows in it, handing me one, “You can't always live in the shadow, buddy.”

Can't always live in the shadow. How hard it would be.

“How about thanking him after this game, huh?” Martha asks, with her head tilted, “Naib's probably chased by the Hunter right now. We don't want to waste too much time here.”

“Okay, that works for me.” Emily says, set herself up straight, following Martha, “Let's go decoding.”

She takes a last look at the coffin, then her eyes move to the bushes. She waves a little bit, smiles and turns away.

After making sure they're gone, I lean back, my head on the stucco wall, my cheeks burning.

It's the first time, my heart beating so fast, so hard.

I think I fall in love with her.
